THE 58TH FUSELIER BATTALION

1945-1946

 

 

SHORT HISTORY

 

The 58th Fuselier Battalion was raised at the "Baron Drubbel" barracks in Antwerpen on June 6 1945.

The battalion is administratively attached to the 21st Fuselier Brigade "ARDENNES" on June 20 1945.

After the initial training, the battalion is put at the disposal of the 21st Army Group in August 1945.

On September 24 1945 the unit moves from Antwerpen to Overijsse where it assumes
guard duty in 2228 POW Camp.

The unit is administratively reattached to the 18th Fuselier Brigade on November 30 1945.

On April 6 1946 the 3th Company assumes guard duty in the 2375 POW Camp in Enghien.

The battalion is administratively reattached to the 15th Fuselier Brigade "RESISTANCE" on April 16 1946.

On May 5 1946 the unit is put at the disposal of the Belgian Authorities.

The battalion moves to Mechelen on May 10 1946.

The 58th Fuselier Battalion is disbanded at Mechelen on May 31 1946.

FORMATION BADGES

 

The 58th Fuselier Battalion wore two different Formation Badges.

The first is the Formation Badge of the 21st Fuselier Brigade "ARDENNES".

The battalion received the badges on November 5 1945.

Though the battalion is attached to the 18th Fuselier Brigade "WESTROOSBEKE" on November 30 1945,
it is only on February 14 1946 that the battalion starts wearing
the Formation Badge of the of the 18th Fuselier Brigade.

The battalion receives the authorisation to continue to wear this formation badge
when it is administratively reattached to the 15th Fuselier Brigade "RESISTANCE".

The 58th Fuselier Battalion wears the Formation Badge of the 18th Fuselier Brigade until disbandment.

 

OTHER INSIGNIA

Belgian Rank Insignia were worn.

On the shoulder straps the Belgian Crown, for the Infantry, was  worn above the number "21".

Once reattached to the 18th Fuselier Brigade, the number "18" was worn.

The number "15" has never been worn.

The Infantry flash was worn on both sleeves.

On the left sleeve the white "BELGIUM" title was worn.

On the right sleeve the Belgian National Colours were worn.
