THE 53RD FUSELIER BATTALION

SHORT HISTORY

 

The 53rd Fuselier Battalion is raised at Tervuren on May 5 1945
and put at the disposal of the 21st Army Group the same day.

A few days later, on May 21 1945, the unit is administratively attached
to the 19th Fuselier Brigade"PASSCHENDAELE".

At the end of the training period, on August 2 1945, the unit is reattached
to the 20th Fuselier Brigade "ERTVELDE".

Two days later the battalion moves to Leuven.

Starts a period of guarding vital installations of the 21st Army Group.

Requisitioning of latrines...

On November 26 1945 the unit is put at the disposal of the Belgian Authorities
and moves to the military barracks of Beverloo near Leopoldsburg.

There the 53rd Fuselier Battalion is disbanded on December 24 1945.

FORMATION BADGE

 

The 53rd Fuselier Battalion wore the formation badge of the 20th Fuselier Brigade "ERTVELDE".

The badge was introduced by Brigade Order n 43 of October 17 1945.

The Formation Badge had to be worn on both sleeves.

OTHER INSIGNIA

Belgian Rank Insignia were worn.

On the shoulder straps the Belgian Crown, for the Infantry, was  worn above the number "20".

The Infantry flash was worn on both sleeves.

On the left sleeve the white "BELGIUM" title was worn.

On the right sleeve the Belgian National Colours were worn.
